Practice Areas

Six legal verticals. One client per area, per metro.

Citorian works exclusively with high-stakes legal practices where SEO and GEO economics make the largest difference: personal injury, mass tort, medical malpractice, criminal defense, high-net-worth divorce, and tax resolution. The single-client constraint per practice area, per metro is the discipline that makes the work compound.

The discipline is the point.

Citorian's practice-area focus is not a marketing constraint. It is the structural reason the methodology works.

Every page of authority content we publish, every directory profile we earn, every schema implementation we ship is built for one specific firm, in one specific metro, in one specific practice area. Nothing we publish for one client compounds against another client's interests, because no two clients in the same practice area in the same metro exist.

That constraint is also what AI engines reward. The engines weigh corroboration heavily when deciding which firms to name in their answers. Depth and consistency around a focused practice area produce the corroboration signal. Breadth dilutes it. The firms that win AI citation share are the firms with the most concentrated authority, not the most diluted one.

Six practice areas are listed below, each with its own buyer journey, its own authority sources, and its own AI citation dynamics. The framework is the same. The execution differs.

The six practice areas, side by side.

Each vertical has its own case-value range, buyer journey, AI citation importance, and engagement timeline. The framework is the same across all six; the execution differs by these dimensions. Scan the matrix to find your vertical, then read the full block below.

Practice Area Typical Case Value Buyer Journey AI Citation Importance Typical Timeline to Lift
Personal Injury $50K - $500K+ per case Urgent, decision-stage. Often within hours of incident. Very high. AI engines increasingly answer "best PI lawyer near me" queries directly. 8 to 12 weeks
Mass Tort & Class Action $45K - $82K per plaintiff signing Awareness-driven. Spike-stage demand requires pre-positioned content. High. Emerging-tort queries pull from the narrow pool of early sources. 10 to 14 weeks
Medical Malpractice $250K - $500K+ per case Long-cycle research. Families spend weeks before contacting a firm. Highest. YMYL bar elevated. Citation is the deciding signal. 10 to 14 weeks
Criminal Defense & DUI $3K - $50K+ per retainer Urgent, high-intent. 24 to 72 hour decision window. High. Local pack and AI Overviews dominate the moment-of-decision queries. 8 to 12 weeks
High-Net-Worth Divorce $40K - $82K+ per retainer plus back-end Long, discreet research. Months of consideration. Discretion is essential. Medium-high. AI engines surface boutique specialists for complex-asset queries. 12 to 18 weeks
Tax Resolution & IRS Defense $5K - $50K+ per representation Time-sensitive. IRS deadlines and audit windows drive urgency. High. Procedural queries (offers in compromise, levies) reward demonstrated authority. 10 to 14 weeks

Ranges are typical and illustrative based on industry benchmarks. Timeline to first measurable visibility lift depends on competitive density and starting position. No partner can guarantee a specific timeline because the engines control their own systems.

Highest CPCs in legal

Personal Injury Lawyer SEO

Personal injury is the vertical where SEO and GEO economics have the highest case-value impact. A single signed case can be worth $50,000 to $500,000 or more in fees, which means even a modest lift in AI-influenced inquiries can change a firm's year. PI is also the vertical where injured people increasingly skip Google entirely and ask AI engines what to do and which firm to call.

The work for PI firms centers on three dimensions at once: ranking for case-driving queries in the local pack, earning AI citations across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews, and converting the qualified traffic both produce. The right authority signals (bar profiles, legal directories, attorney attribution, named case results) compound across all three.

Case types we focus on
  • Auto and truck accidents
  • Motorcycle accidents
  • Premises liability
  • Product liability
  • Catastrophic injury
  • Wrongful death
Right for

Contingency-fee firms that take cases worth $50K+ in fees and want compounding visibility instead of paid-lead dependency.

Not right for

Pure referral firms, soft-tissue-only mills, or firms unwilling to publish attorney-attributed authority content.

Timing-sensitive, scale-driven

Mass Tort & Class Action Lawyer SEO

Mass tort is the vertical where timing is the dominant variable. Search demand follows public awareness; firms that build educational content before a tort enters mainstream awareness dominate signups once it does. AI engines reward early authority disproportionately, because emerging-tort queries pull from the small pool of sources that existed when the topic was new.

The work for mass tort firms centers on identifying high-signal torts early, publishing definitive content before competitors arrive, and structuring intake to scale when the awareness spike comes. The economics reward firms that treat early-content investment as a portfolio: not every tort pays back, but the ones that do cover the misses several times over.

Tort categories we focus on
  • Pharmaceutical mass tort
  • Medical device litigation
  • Environmental and toxic exposure
  • Consumer fraud class actions
  • Multi-district litigation (MDL)
  • Workplace exposure cases
Right for

Plaintiff firms with mass tort selection processes, scalable intake infrastructure, and willingness to invest before signings arrive.

Not right for

Firms that take whatever walks in, or firms unwilling to publish before a tort is mainstream-validated.

Highest YMYL bar, longest research cycle

Medical Malpractice Lawyer SEO

Medical malpractice is the vertical where AI citation matters most in consumer legal. Families researching a bad medical outcome spend weeks asking AI engines about diagnosis, standard of care, and lawyer selection before they contact a firm. By the time they pick up the phone, they have made a considered decision, and the firms they reach out to are the ones the engines kept naming.

Med mal sits in YMYL territory (Your Money or Your Life), which elevates the citation bar. Engines want clearer evidence of expertise, attorney attribution to a real licensed person, and corroboration that ties legal authority to medical authority. Firms that meet this bar earn outsized citation share precisely because most do not.

Conditions we focus on
  • Birth injury and cerebral palsy
  • Surgical error
  • Misdiagnosis and delayed diagnosis
  • Medication errors
  • Anesthesia errors
  • Hospital-acquired infections
Right for

Med mal specialty firms with deep condition expertise and willingness to engage medical-expert review of published content.

Not right for

Generalist firms, or firms unwilling to publish attorney-attributed content meeting the YMYL E-E-A-T bar.

Urgent, high-intent

Criminal Defense & DUI Lawyer SEO

Criminal defense is the vertical where urgency dominates the buyer journey. People searching for criminal defense lawyers are often within hours of arrest, or facing imminent charges. AI engines and local-pack results compete to surface the firm that answers confidently in that moment. The firms that win earn cases at the highest-intent stage of the funnel.

The work for criminal defense firms centers on practice-specific depth (DUI is different from federal defense, which is different from white-collar), local-pack and AI-citation visibility for the city plus offense combinations that drive cases, and content that explains the legal process clearly and confidently without overpromising outcomes.

Case types we focus on
  • DUI / DWI defense
  • Drug offenses
  • White collar and federal defense
  • Violent crime defense
  • Domestic violence defense
  • Expungement and post-conviction
Right for

Criminal defense firms with clear practice focus and willingness to publish honest, attorney-attributed information about legal process.

Not right for

General-practice firms that handle criminal defense as a sideline, or firms unwilling to comply with state bar advertising rules.

Discreet, high-value

High-Net-Worth Divorce Lawyer SEO

High-net-worth divorce is the vertical where discretion and credibility matter as much as visibility. Clients with significant marital estates research extensively before contacting a firm, often for months, and they look for firms that signal experience handling complex assets, business valuations, and executive-level custody disputes. AI engines that surface firms positioned as discreet specialists get cited.

The work for HNW divorce firms centers on demonstrated depth in complex case types (not high-volume divorce mills), positioning content that speaks to the actual reader (business owners, executives, professionals), and authority signals that distinguish a boutique family law firm from the broader divorce-lawyer category.

Case types we focus on
  • Complex asset division
  • Business valuation in divorce
  • Custody disputes for executives
  • Premarital and postmarital agreements
  • International divorce
  • Collaborative divorce and mediation
Right for

Boutique family law firms that take cases involving $5M+ marital estates, executives, business owners, and complex valuation work.

Not right for

High-volume divorce mills or firms positioning on price rather than complexity expertise.

Time-sensitive, IRS-procedural

Tax Resolution & IRS Defense Lawyer SEO

Tax resolution is the vertical where IRS deadlines and procedural urgency dominate the buyer journey. People searching for tax resolution lawyers are often facing audit notices, levies, liens, or unfiled-return exposure. AI engines reward firms that demonstrate both legal authority (JD with admission to tax court) and procedural depth (working knowledge of IRS forms, programs, and timelines).

The work for tax resolution firms centers on distinguishing legal practice from tax-prep practice, building content authority around specific IRS programs (offers in compromise, installment agreements, currently-not-collectible status), and earning citations for procedural queries that drive consultations.

Case types we focus on
  • Tax debt resolution
  • Offers in compromise
  • IRS audit representation
  • Employment tax cases
  • Tax court litigation
  • International tax compliance
Right for

Tax law firms with IRS representation experience, ideally JD plus EA or CPA credentials, that compete on procedural depth.

Not right for

Tax-prep firms without legal credentials, or firms whose primary work is bookkeeping or compliance rather than resolution.

Where we do not work

Practice areas Citorian deliberately does not serve.

The list of what an agency declines is a stronger signal of focus than the list of what it accepts. Five categories where Citorian's methodology does not fit, and where the right answer is a different agency or a different marketing model.

Corporate transactional, M&A, and capital markets

BD-driven practice areas where partner relationships, conference circuits, and league-table positioning matter more than SEO. The math does not work because the audience does not behave that way.

IP litigation and patent prosecution

Highly specialized buyer audience reached through trade publications, expert directories, and industry events rather than search or AI engines. Different marketing model entirely.

Immigration in non-bilingual markets

Language-driven dynamics that sit outside English-language SEO and GEO. Bilingual or single-language non-English markets need agencies with native-language content infrastructure, which Citorian does not have.

Consumer bankruptcy as a standalone practice

Commoditized intent with thin margins per case. The economics work for high-volume operations, not for the boutique model Citorian runs.

General-practice and full-service firms

Diluted topical authority signals work against the firm and against every other firm we serve. Practice-area focus is the precondition for the methodology to compound.

"What we will not do is, in the end, more important than what we will. The constraint is the brand."

Frequently asked

About the practice-area constraint.

How does Citorian choose which practice area to serve in a given metro?
Citorian works with one firm per practice area, per metropolitan market. When multiple firms inquire in the same metro for the same practice area, the engagement goes to the firm that best matches Citorian's criteria for practice depth, willingness to invest in citation-worthy authority work, and alignment with the methodology. Once an engagement begins, that practice area in that metro is closed for the duration of the relationship, which protects the firm from competing against its own agency.
Can Citorian work with two firms in different practice areas in the same metro?
Yes. The one-client constraint applies to practice area and metro together, not to metro alone. A personal injury firm in Houston and a high-net-worth divorce firm in Houston do not compete for the same clients or rank for the same queries, so they are not in conflict. A Houston PI firm and a Dallas PI firm also do not conflict. The constraint is designed to protect each client from working against a competitor of theirs.
What if my practice handles multiple practice areas?
Many serious legal practices handle adjacent areas. A firm that does personal injury and medical malpractice, or criminal defense and DUI, is common. In those cases the engagement is scoped to the primary practice area where the firm makes its case economics, and the related secondary practice area is covered as part of that work. What Citorian does not do is generalist marketing for firms that take whatever walks in. The methodology is built on focused practice depth and falls apart without it.
How does the approach differ across practice areas?
The framework is the same: technical foundation, content authority, structured data, citation across trusted sources, and measurement across both Google search and the AI engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Google AI Overviews). The execution differs because the buyer journey differs. Personal injury queries are urgent and decision-stage. Medical malpractice queries are long-cycle research-stage. Mass tort queries depend on timing relative to public awareness. Each practice area has its own content shape, its own authority sources, and its own measurement focus.
What is a typical engagement timeline?
Most engagements run an initial six-month term to complete foundation work and reach first results, then renew in three-month terms. First meaningful organic and AI visibility movement typically appears within 8 to 14 weeks depending on the practice area and starting point. Compounding visibility usually shows in months 4 through 12. Engagement length depends on the firm's goals and how competitive the metro is. No responsible partner can guarantee a specific timeline, because the engines control their own systems.
Why does practice-area focus matter for AI citations specifically?
AI engines weigh corroboration heavily when deciding which firms to name in an answer. A firm with deep documented expertise in two or three specific case types in a specific metro is easier for an engine to corroborate than a generalist firm with broad but shallow coverage. The structural advantage of focus is even stronger in AI citation than in traditional ranking, because corroboration is the engine's primary signal. Boutique practices with focused expertise often outperform larger generalist firms for AI-cited intent.
Can Citorian take a firm that already has an SEO agency?
Yes, transitions happen regularly. The first conversation includes an honest assessment of what the existing agency has built, what is worth keeping, and what needs to be rebuilt. Citorian does not assume the prior work is wrong. Where there is salvageable foundation, we build on it. Where prior work is hurting the firm (templated content, manipulated reviews, off-policy link building), the transition includes a remediation plan.
What if my practice area is not listed here?
The six practice areas listed are the verticals where the case economics and the AI citation dynamics align best with Citorian's methodology. Adjacent practices (employment, immigration, family law beyond high-net-worth divorce, bankruptcy beyond consumer chapter 7) are taken on a case-by-case basis when the firm's positioning fits. Practice areas Citorian deliberately does not serve are listed above.
